How To Do Transcendental Meditation

This quick visual guide from Business Insider shows how simple it is to dedicate some time to transcendental meditation every day.

Sit down somewhere you’ll be comfortable – they recommend a cozy chair, but a soft pillow, chair on the deck or a mountain’s peak work just as well!

Now you’ll begin with a few seconds of total quiet, then slowly ease your brain into repeating the mantra you were given.

You’ll then repeat the mantra in your head. It should be at your own individual pace, no set rhythm.

Don’t focus on your breathing, as you do in most meditations. Focus only on your mantra.

Now keep on repeating the mantra at your own pace, but let other thoughts or visualizations seep in as well.

At this point, some people begin to experience a moment of “transcendence”, meaning a feeling of total peace and relaxation. Don’t worry if you don’t feel it right away, it may take practice.

Meditate in your most restful state for 20 minutes. Before you open your eyes again, take a few minutes to “wake up”, not repeating your mantra or focusing on anything in particular.

Ideally, practice this meditation two times per day.

Although TM teachers recommend practicing the method twice per day, many people have also found it to be effective in just one session per day. Do what you can, and try to build on that.
