A former school groundskeeper Dewayne “Lee” Johnson has just been awarded a whopping $289 million dollars in damages by a jury in San Francisco Superior Court.

The first time, according to Dewayne was 2012 and he was subsequently diagnosed in 2014 with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

He was 42 at the time and is now 46 and has terminal cancer. The composition of the $289 million dollar payout includes $39 million in compensatory damages and the remainder is punitive damages.

Glyphosate, is one of the main ingredients in Roundup, and there is much controversy surrounding whether this ingredient is harmful to humans. Monsanto is adamant that years of scientific research indicates this is not true and that indeed, it is safe to use.

When it comes to the Dewayne “Lee” Johnson Trial, here’s what Monsanto had to say.

Vice President Scott Partridge issued a statement after the verdict was handed down. He said that whilst the Agricultural Company is sympathetic to Mr Johnson and his family, Monsanto holds that glyphosate — the active ingredient in Roundup — does not cause cancer, citing hundreds of studies. He also went on to say.

“We will appeal this decision and continue to vigorously defend this product, which has a 40-year history of safe use and continues to be a vital, effective, and safe tool for farmers and others,”
