Helping Angry Child Calm Down is a much-searched term and many would love to know the answer. Today Katie shares her secrets and you are guaranteed to love them.

Helping children calm down when they’re angry is as difficult for the parent as it is for the child. That’s why these proven strategies are so effective – they help you both at the same time.

Katie Chiavarone is the face behind Views From A Step Stool and she is sharing her proven and very simple strategies for helping kids to calm down on their own.

When it comes to helping angry children calm down, Katie Chiavarone knows how! Having obtained a Masters in Educational from NYU, she spent much of her early career working in pre and elementary schools as a behavior therapist for kids with Autism.

For Katie, the only thing that would fulfil her sense of accomplishment was to become the one thing she had always aspired to be – a Mom.

When that dream came true her blog Views From a Step Stool was born. Now, as her three children grow, she inspires Moms through her blog with clever tips and encouragement.

8 Ways To Help An Angry Child Calm Down

In the infographic above, Katie shares some of the strategies that work best in helping children manage anger – with some help from Mom and Dad.

  1. Count to 5. Counting helps kids step out of the moment and control their impulses. It’s the best thing to start with since it can be the strategy that works most often.
  2. Take a deep breath. Even if your child seems too exasperated to take a deep breath, have them try to take one or two big ones.
  3. Blow into your hands. By blowing into their hands, kids can feel how angry they are by how strong their breath is.
  4.  Place hands in pockets. This is a good one for kids who are caught in the moment of anger and can’t seem to get out. Either have them put their hands in their pockets or sit on their own hands, or even clasp them tightly together. This helps them practice physical restraint and can help them gain better control of their emotions.
  5.  Acknowledge Antecedents to anger. Help your child identify how their body is reacting to their anger. What does their face feel like, hands feel like. etc.
  6.  Make a fist then relax the hand. Children often do not realize how much tension they’re holding onto. Squeezing their hands into tight fists and then relaxing them is a good way to help them feel the difference between physical tension and calm.
  7.  Do a body scan. Encourage your child to slowly relax all the muscles in their body starting at their heads and working down to their toes.
  8.  Ask for a hug. Sometimes all they need is to find someone who will give them a good, loving hug!
