Denim Rag Jeans Quilt Special Notes

Before you jump in to this project, there are a few things you should know. First off, work out the size Quilt you would like to make. You can use an existing rug that you have as a size template.

The type of denim you’re using whilst not important, you can even use a combination of different types and colors, needs special attention if stretch denim.

The Creator of this Tutorial, Instructables user sjolly2, says that if you’re planning to use stretch denim to be sure that you don’t pull it too tight as it will fray.

Another great idea is this beautiful version that includes flannelette and fabric. The Creator refers to it as a washed up cowboy style. We absolutely love it. The ruffle detail is stunning.

We can see this laying across the end of a bed or the back of the lounge. The great news is that this one is available for sale on Etsy. You can check out the whole collection here

Denim Jeans Instructions

1) Begin by prepping your pairs of jeans. Be sure to cut off all pockets, decorative trim and zippers. A good tip is to simply cut the top of the jeans off (as if you’re making jean shorts). You will get the most material for your squares from the legs however you can incorporate the pocket in your design if you like as shown by the version above. We found the photo above on Pinterest but it appears that the blog has since been removed.

2) You’ll now need to figure out exactly how many squares you’ll need! This involves some simple math  – First, decide what size your finished quilt will be. Divide the number of inches across by 5, as well as the length. Then take both results and multiply them together. This will be the number of squares you’ll need!

3) Cut out your squares using your template. You can make one out of acrylic or cardboard even.

4) Lay out your quilt squares in rows. Move them around and assemble in a pattern that you are happy with.

5) Assemble your rows with wrong sides of the fabric facing up. Sew them with a 5/8″ seam.

6) Sew your rows together, making a few reverse backstitches every few inches to lock your seams in place.

7) Once all pieces are stitched together, be sure to check your measurements and see that your finished product is the right size! Lay it out and measure it against your template or bed.

8) Trim the sides if there are any uneven cuts, frays, bumps or wrinkles. You want a nice, smooth edge to work with.

9) The final steps will be to add your batting (filler) and backing material.

10) You’ll then need to sew all three layers together, tie up all loose ends and wash and trim.

As you can see this is a very simple project and you can have fun using a variety of colors and fabrics. Use some of the featured projects in this post for inspiration. To learn more about this project and see the creators other ideas, see here
