This is due to the fact that supermarket potatoes are sprayed with an inhibitor that stops them from sprouting.
Others however say that you can grow potatoes just as easily from the store-bought version. If you do it this way, be sure that you give them a thorough clean. This will help to remove any of the residue from the inhibitor.
Tips For Sprouting Your Potatoes
The best way to make your potatoes sprout is to pop them in a plastic bag on your windowsill. Alternately, if you use seed potatoes, purchase them ahead of time to give them the necessary sprouting time.
